Homicide investigation in Kaitāia as 57-year-old woman taken into custody

A homicide investigation has been launched and a woman is in custody after a death in the Northland town of Kaitāia this afternoon.

Police responded to reports of an assault at an Okahu Road property around 12.35pm.

A person was discovered in a critical condition but could not be saved by emergency services and died at the scene.

Detective Inspector Geoff McCarthy confirmed a 57-year-old woman has been taken into custody and there were no other persons of interest at this time.

Police arrested her at a different address soon after the incident.

She will appear in the Kaitāia District Court tomorrow on undisclosed charges.

Cordons are still in place as a scene examination will take place tomorrow.
