Auckland drive-by shootings: Windows smashed by shots fired at home in Weymouth

NZ Herald

A drive-by shooting in the South Auckland suburb of Weymouth last night has left residents in shock, too traumatised to speak.

The shooting in Roscommon Rd, close to Clendon McDonald’s, resulted in damage to multiple windows in the house as well as to a car in the driveway.

It’s understood the offenders went to a family’s residence, fired multiple rounds of ammunition and then fled.

Residents were in shock this morning, with a neighbour saying at first they thought it was a car crash, but realised it was “something more” after hearing several “bangs”.

“First it was just one loud bang, then it was bang bang bang … I think there were six or seven,” she said.

They later learned from police that they were gunshots.

“It’s pretty scary really, to think this could happen on your street,” the neighbour said.

Police confirmed they responded around 10.15pm to reports of a firearm being discharged towards a residential address on Roscommon Rd.

“No injuries were reported to a number of people who were inside the property at the time. Enquiries are now ongoing at the address to determine the full circumstances of what has occurred including who is responsible.”

Anyone with information that could help is asked to contact the 105 police service, referencing file number 240618/0603, or to provide information anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police also responded to a report of a firearm being “allegedly discharged towards a residential address” on nearby Bernina Place at 12.31am. Again, no injuries were reported. Anyone who can help with information is asked to contact police, referencing file number 240618/0639.

The Roscommon Rd drive-by is the third such shooting in Auckland in just a fortnight, after homes in Onehunga and Māngere East were targeted on June 6.

A grandmother living at the Māngere East house told the Herald she was scared and angry after her home was sprayed with bullets while her family - including a baby granddaughter - were inside watching TV.

She said she was baffled as to why a “punk-ass” chose to target her home, where she has lived for at least 16 years.

The same night, two men dressed in black blasted a hole in an Onehunga garage, terrifying a neighbour who was taking out his rubbish. The shooting happened at a Kāinga Ora property complex.

On Sunday night, a home in the East Auckland suburb of Glen Innes was also reportedly shot at. The Herald understands multiple shots were heard, although it’s not clear if anything was struck.

A police spokesperson confirmed they were making inquiries into that incident, which happened at a residential address on Leaside Lane around 9.35pm.

“Thankfully, no injuries were reported to a number of people who were inside the property at the time.”

Police were looking into the “full circumstances of what has occurred including who is responsible”.

Inquiries into the incident are ongoing, police said this morning.

Anyone with information about the Glen Innes incident is asked to contact police referencing P059073551.
