Pedestrian critical after crash involving van in Red Beach, north Auckland
A man is in a critical condition after apparently being hit by a van in the northern Auckland suburb of Red Beach last night.
Emergency services were called to the crash on Whangaparaoa Rd around 9pm.
“On arrival the male pedestrian was located with critical injuries, and he was transported to Auckland City Hospital,” acting Detective Inspector Megan Goldie said.
“The Serious Crash Unit attended the scene overnight, and an investigation is underway to establish how the crash occurred.”
Police said the pedestrian, who is from the Whangaparaoa area, remains in a critical condition this morning.
The driver of the van was uninjured.
Hato Hone St John sent two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle, and one patient was taken to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition, a spokesman said.
Photos from the scene show a white van with damage to its front right corner, including a dented bonnet and smashed windscreen.

A Herald photographer said Whangaparaoa Rd was closed at the intersection with Hibiscus Coast Highway while traffic management crews assisted with closures.
A specialist crash investigator was examining the scene near the intersection with Tawhana Crescent.

The van involved in the incident was towed and the road reopened shortly after midnight, he said.
The NZ Transport Agency website shows the road has been reopened.
