Manurewa incident: Investigators probe ‘serious assault’, suspicious fire at Sunlands Drive house
Investigations are underway after an incident in South Auckland where a person was assaulted and a suspicious fire broke out in a bedroom of a multi-storey house.
Police said they received a report of a “serious assault” at a property on Sunlands Drive, Manurewa, at about 5.35am.
“Upon arrival one person was located with serious injuries and transported to hospital,” Detective Inspector Karen Bright, of Counties Manukau CIB, told the Herald.
“Enquiries are now underway to understand what has taken place and locate the person responsible.”
Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Josh Pennefather said a call was received at 5.38am, reporting a fire in a house on Sunlands Drive.
“It was a multi-storey building with a fire in a bedroom on the third floor,” he told the Herald.
“Everyone was out of the house at the time, and the fire’s since been extinguished, and we have a fire investigator on site.
“When we arrived, everyone was accounted for.”
Pennefather said the fire was being treated as suspicious. Police confirmed that the two incidents are connected.
“Police would like to hear from anyone who may have information about this incident or those involved,” Bright added.
“Additionally, if you observed anything out of the ordinary or have CCTV or dashcam footage of Sunlands Drive and surrounding areas, between 3.30am and 6am this morning, please get in touch.”
