A 35-year-old man has been arrested after an alleged assault on a child in Havelock North late last week.
Police had been seeking the driver of a grey ute after a 12-year-old was allegedly assaulted at a BMX park.
The child was at Guthrie Park when he was approached about 3.10pm on Friday.
The man was taken into custody without incident in Picton earlier today.
He is due to appear in the Blenheim District Court tomorrow, where he will face three serious charges in relation to the incident.
Police have opposed bail.
Detective Inspector James Keene acknowledged the role of the public in assisting the investigation, thanking those who came forward with information.
“Police are providing the necessary ongoing support to the victim and their family following what was quite a distressing incident,” Keene said.
“I want to acknowledge the work of police staff across the Eastern, Wellington and Tasman districts for their collaborative work and swift apprehension of this person.
“We know these incidents can cause a great amount of concern amongst our communities, and we urge people to remain alert.”
Authorities said incidents like this can cause concern within the community and are urging people to remain vigilant. Anyone who feels unsafe or notices suspicious behaviour is encouraged to call 111.
Police said they will conduct reassurance patrols in the area surrounding Guthrie Park.
