King’s Birthday weather: MetService warns of heavy rain and gales hitting North Island overnight

Severe weather warnings have been issued by MetService for heavy rain and gales in parts of the North and South Islands.

A trough embedded in a humid northerly flow is bringing heavy rain to northern and western areas of the South Island, as well as parts of the North Island.

Northeast winds may approach severe gale about parts of the North Island.

Watches and warnings are in force for multiple areas, and thunderstorm warnings may be issued for downpours.

Heavy rain and gales have drifted up from the south overnight with a band of rain settling over the top half of the country today.

MetService meteorologist Katie Lyons said with Northland being a popular getaway particularly for Aucklanders, people should stay alert to weather updates.

“Keep a close eye on the weather updates and use best judgment when it comes to surface flooding and things ... find alternative routes.”

In Northland, an orange heavy rain warning has been issued, with 50 to 90mm of rain expected to fall on top of what has already come down. Some localised areas could see 130mm.

The warning is in place for the 10-hours between 8pm on Monday and 6am on Tuesday.

Taranaki Maunga is also under a heavy rain warning, with 100 to 150mm of additional rain expected.

This warning is valid for a 12-hour period from 8pm on Monday to 8am on Tuesday.

Other areas that are under heavy rain warnings include Richmond and Bryant ranges, the Rai Valley, Tasman District northwest of Motueka, the ranges of Buller, Westland south of Hokitika, Bay of Plenty and Rotorua west of Whakatāne, Bay of Plenty east of Whakatāne, the ranges of Gisborne/Tairāwhiti north of Tokomaru Bay, and Tongariro National Park.

MetService urges the public stay updated with the latest forecasts and take precautions, such as clearing drains and gutters, avoiding low-lying areas, and driving cautiously.
