Two police cars were rammed this evening after officers used road spikes to stop a fleeing car in Hawke’s Bay, only for the vehicle to keep driving while smoking and on fire.

Police spotted the vehicle on Clive St in Hastings just before 6.15pm. It had allegedly been involved in a separate fleeing driver incident yesterday.

The driver allegedly ignored police signals to stop and fled through rural roads towards Havelock North.

Acting Senior Sergeant Matthew Wilkin said police successfully spiked the vehicle’s tyres, but it kept going despite the wheels sparking and the car “smoking and on fire”.

Police followed the vehicle from a distance before blocking it on Flaxmere Ave.

Wilkin said the driver made a final “desperate bid” to escape, ramming two police patrol cars.

No one was injured, though the police cars were damaged, he said.

A 29-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman were arrested “without incident”.

Police said the pair had existing warrants for their arrest on unrelated matters and would face additional charges in relation to tonight’s incident.

Cordons remain in place while police examine the scene.
