The search for a diver missing near Whakatāne has been called off for the night.
Emergency services were notified of a person in distress around Sugarloaf Rocks about 1.30pm.
Senior Constable Andrew McCarthy said the search will continue tomorrow morning with the support of Whakatāne Coastguard, Whakatāne Surf Lifesaving, and the Police National Dive Squad.
“Police acknowledge the efforts of all partner agencies involved in today’s search and thank them for their ongoing assistance,” he said.
