Wellington traffic delays as Vivian St fire shuts State Highway 1

NZ Herald

Wellington motorists are warned to expect delays after a central city building fire temporarily closed State Highway 1.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was called to SH1/Vivian St in the CBD at about 4.30pm after reports of smoke coming from a building.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke showing from the third or fourth floor.

Additional crews were called in from Wellington City and a support vehicle from Remutaka.

The highway was closed at the intersection of Taranaki St for about 30 minutes.

The fire was later extinguished. The extent of the damage was not immediately known.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said the road reopened shortly after 5.25pm, although motorists were warned to expect delays while traffic cleared.
