Wellington traffic delays after 3 crashes shut major routes in wet weather

NZ Herald

Three key roads in the Wellington region are blocked after separate crashes this afternoon, as heavy rain lashes the capital.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the Paremata and Pāuatahanui area following a two-vehicle crash that has closed part of State Highway 58 this evening.

The collision near the intersection of Bayview Rd was reported just after 5pm.

Both directions between the roundabout of State Highway 58/State Highway 59 and Postgate Drive remain closed, causing significant delays.

The latest incident is the third crash to affect the region today amid worsening weather conditions.

Earlier today, the Wellington Urban Motorway was blocked after an incident near the Aotea Quay off-ramp just before 2.10pm, police said.

One person has minor injuries and motorists are being warned of delays.

To the north, a single-vehicle crash has closed State Highway 58, between Pāuatahanui and Paremata this afternoon.

NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) said the crash was reported near the James Cook Drive intersection about 1.30 pm.

“The highway is now closed to traffic in both directions while emergency services attend the incident and the crash site is cleared,” NZTA said in a statement.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
