There’s a mysterious alchemy to creating a space that looks and feels good – and a lot of it has to do with the lighting.

The key to getting lighting right is combining different types (task, ambient and accent) at varying levels, to achieve a scheme that delivers both form and function. Additionally, consider using separate switches or dimmers for different lighting zones to change the lighting levels when a moodier vibe is required.

Kitchens and bathrooms

Well-planned lighting is fundamental to the success of both your kitchen and bathroom, where focused illumination is needed for work areas. Downlights are great for kitchens, especially near areas for food prep and cleaning zones. If you have overhead cupboards, add recessed downlighting to make the most of your bench space. You will need bright lighting near the bathroom mirror – either above the mirror or on either side of it, for tasks like applying makeup and shaving, as well as more subtle ambient lighting for when the room is being used as a relaxation zone.

Get the hang of it

A dramatic pendant lamp or chandelier hung low over the dining table helps create a focal point, especially if the other lights in the room are dimmed or turned off for special occasions, such as a dinner party. If you’re not the chandelier type, try hanging a single pendant, or perhaps a grouping of three lights at different heights, above the table.

Accent lighting

Accent lighting adds depth, visual interest and highlights specific areas or architectural features. It can be used to showcase artwork, decorative elements, or display shelving. The style and placement of your lighting fixtures should enhance both the artwork and the overall look and feel of the room, creating a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing space. Consider installing wall lights or track-lighting fixtures to create a focal point or draw attention to particular areas.

In the bedroom

A sleep zone needs a range of lighting options: bright lighting for reading at night and soft lighting for ambience. Wall lights positioned above a bed are ideal for illuminating a book at night, and bedside lamps can be used for both reading or mood lighting, depending on the wattage of the light bulb. A pendant in the middle of the room is great for those dull days when there’s not much sunshine and you need to pump up the light a bit.

Working from home

Lighting is fundamental to a high-functioning home office. Ideally your room will get lots of natural light during the day. Then you’ll need to add desk lamps or down-lights for intricate tasks and reading.

Outdoor lighting

Outdoor lighting plans should combine sensors, path lights and task lamps.

It’s worth developing a strategic lighting plan for outdoors to highlight communal spaces and gently illuminate the wider area. Install a bright task light near the barbecue so you can see when the meat is cooked. Pathways should be well-lit with step lights or lights set into a wall. Put them on a sensor so the lighting comes on automatically when visitors approach.
