Consider small additions for easy transitional dressing.

Stocking a new season wardrobe for the autumn and winter months can be costly.

But, there are ways to transition lighter pieces into cooler weather. Enter: insulating accessories.

Reaching for a trusted hat, scarf or pair of gloves can make taking on the elements a little easier. It’s also a smart decision for the changeable weather patterns within Aotearoa New Zealand – smaller layers can be dropped into bags once they’re no longer needed.

Below, consider a collection of coverings for your head, neck, arms and feet (and keep an eye out for more comprehensive guides to socks, tights and coats coming soon).

Natalie Robb of Amelie Knits learnt to spin her own yarn on a gifted spinning wheel last year, and produced a charming four-piece collection. This pōtae, knitted, crocheted and embellished with a grey and red rose, is one still available for purchase among her coveted knits.

Quilted textures, as seen on this Kowtow bucket hat, appear plush and also work to keep the heat in. The shape of this hat will protect from strong gusts.

There are plenty of hues to choose from in Kathmandu’s range of beanies, but this purple is a rich and cheerful choice for grey days.

Celebrate citrus season with a zesty topper by knitter Bonnie Wroe, based in Pōneke. It’s specifically designed for those who don’t want to flatten their hair (and is a great alternative to a beanie for those with a fringe).

An offering from another Wellington-based hatter. This paperboy cap is extra (extra!) and makes a lively addition to monochromatic outfits.

This merino wool balaclava sits snug to buffer winds. It’s also made in Auckland.

This simple staple, made from merino, could hang by your door for the times you’re just nipping out into the cold. It’s a little longer, meaning it can be styled in all sorts of ways.

A smaller triangle-shaped scarf, if nestled neatly, can provide a little shelter over T-shirts and with wider necklines. It can also be worn over your head.

One-of-a-kind colourways are the result of an innovative recycling process at NZ knitwear label Untouched World. You can opt for a scarf with a grey hue (pictured) or one with a lighter pink shade.

A bright hue for those who prefer colour. These gloves are also made of a warming merino.

These long gloves will allow you to transition short-sleeved and sleeveless tops for cooler weather and can be easily stored once you’re in warmer environments.

Tāmaki Makaurau designer Catherine Boddy has created these longline gloves, which leave your thumb and index finger free for 21st-century dexterity.

These gloves are a blend of merino, possum and silk, and reach about halfway up the forearm. Good for layering with a sturdy jacket.

Pitter-pattering around your home? Consider a pair of slippers. These ones, made of cashmere, add a little luxury to every step.
