A diver has died after he was attacked by a suspected 4.5m shark off Western Australia’s coastline on Saturday morning.
The incident is believed to have unfolded shortly before 11.20am local time, near Michaelmas Island, off the coast of Albany – about 420km southeast of Perth.
Emergency services rushed to Albany Waterfront Marina where a boat carrying the fatally injured man, 35, was expected to meet paramedics.
But WA Police later confirmed the man was “unable to be revived”.
“A 35-year-old man was spearfishing with family off Michaelmas Island when he was attacked by a shark,” a spokeswoman said.
“He was conveyed back to shore by boat where he was met by SJA [St John Ambulance] WA paramedics.
“Sadly, he was unable to be revived. WA Police will prepare a report for the coroner.”
A St John Ambulance spokesman said the man was believed to have suffered critical injuries in the suspected shark attack.
A shark, estimated about 4.5m in length, was reported by a member of the public off Michaelmas Island to Shark Smart on Saturday morning.
Michaelmas Island is located about 13km off Western Australia’s southern coastline in King George Sound.
The incident comes three weeks after Steven Mattaboni, 38, was killed while spearfishing off Rottnest Island.
The father of two was believed to have been bitten by a great white shark about 1km offshore on May 16.
In between the Western Australia tragedies, a 39-year-old man died after a shark attack at Kennedy Shoal in Far North Queensland on May 24.
