A house fire has broken out in a South Auckland suburb this evening.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand went to the blaze on Duckworth Rd in Papakura about 5.50pm.

Three fire engines arrived to find a single-storey dwelling “fully involved”, a spokesperson said.

Local resident Tarryn Wallett told the Herald she received a frantic phone call from her husband as he left for the gym.

“He called me and said ‘Close all the windows, there’s a fire’,” she said.

Wallett said she looked out her bedroom window and saw “bright orange flames”.

“Within minutes, massive plumes of smoke were coming from the house,” she said.

Fire and Emergency said all occupants had been accounted for.

The incident was the second major house fire South Auckland crews attended today.

A three-story house on Sunlands Dr in Manurewa caught fire about 5.35am.

All occupants were accounted for, though Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Josh Pennefather said the blaze was being treated as suspicious.

Police said they received reports of a “serious assault” at the property and asked locals with CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch.
