One dead in three-vehicle crash on State Highway 6 in Okaramio, Marlborough, Easter holiday road toll moves to six

One person has died following a crash on State Highway 6 at Okaramio in Marlborough this afternoon.

The fatality brings the Easter holiday road toll to six.

Police were called to the three-vehicle crash at 2.28pm on the the stretch of State Highway 6 between Leslies Rd and Mt Riley Rd. One person died at the scene. Two others sustained moderate injuries. The crash closed SH6.

The Serious Crash Unit attended the accident site and enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

“Police would like to speak with people who witnessed the crash, or saw an olive coloured Nissan Maxima travelling along SH6 between 2pm and the time of the crash, police said.

Hato Hone St John said it was notified of a motor vehicle incident on SH6, Kaituna at 2.25pm and responded by sending two ambulances and one manager to the scene.

“Our crews assessed and treated two patients who were transported to Wairau Hospital in a moderate condition. For further information, please refer to police.”

The crash brought the Easter holiday road toll to six.

SH5 south of Rotorua was closed for several hours following a fatal crash involving two vehicles this morning, but has reopened.

A motorcyclist died after a crash with a tractor in Richmond Downs, Matamata yesterday.

Police were called to Piakonui Rd at 10.40am.

The motorcyclist was taken to hospital with critical injuries and died overnight.

A spokesperson said inquiries into the crash are ongoing.

Meanwhile, three people died and 15 others were injured in two separate crashes near Tekapo on SH8 in Canterbury yesterday.

Only one person was killed on New Zealand roads during the Easter period last year.

Five people died over Easter in 2022, and seven in 2021.
